Westside Officers Help Save Christmas for one Family

On December 20, Houston Police Department Westside officers responded to a burglary in the 8700 block of Leawood.  When they arrived they met Ms. Guillory,  who stated she came home to a broken window and all her Christmas presents for her grandson stolen.  There was wrapping paper on floor and it appeared the suspects had unwrapped the gifts before they stole them.  The suspects also went upstairs in Ms. Guillory’s townhouse and stole several pieces of jewelry she owned.

Mr. Guillory stated that the presents were for her grandson and she had spent all of her money to buy him the presents, mostly clothes that he needed.  The officers were touched and wanted to do something to assist Guillory.  They pooled their money and asked for additional help from other Westside officers.  They collected enough money to be able to present Ms. Guillory with a gift card to replace all the Christmas presents!

"Helpers and Heroes" at Target

First City Wide Positive Interaction Program Meeting of 2017

Shop with a Cop; Shop with a Jock

Recently, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, members of the Houston Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff's Office and Target Superstore held the annual "Shop with a Cop, Shop with a Jock" holiday event.

The holiday "extravaganza" took place at the Target Superstore on South Main Street.

Forty pre-selected individuals participated in an hour-long event that includes a 10-minute shopping spree and celebrity guest appearances with current and retired professional athletes.

During the holiday season, it becomes harder for low income and disadvantaged kids whose parents are struggling to find monetary opportunities to purchase gifts. “Shop with a Cop, Shop with Jock” allows kids to “Live in the Moment” and enjoy the holiday celebration.

911 Heroes Run Donations

From the Houston 911 Heroes Run Race Director Captain Greg Fremin:

Last week at our monthly HPOU Luncheon, I was honored to present on behalf of the Travis Manion Foundation our 911 Heroes Run Charitable Benefactors checks to Assist the Officer and the Houston Professional Firefighters Local 341.
I've been the Houston 911 Heroes Run Race Director for the last 6 years and all the work that goes into this event makes this moment extremely special. 50% of our total race proceeds come back to Houston to assist our men and women in uniform.

A special thanks to Doug Griffith and the HPOU for their unyielding support. Too many others to thank for their assistance, but in the end, the event allows us to honor the sacrifices of the victims of 911 and the wars since...

The Comida/Food Drive began 31 years ago with an officer's concern for the less fortunate citizens of Houston.  That began what is today one of the largest food drives in the city of Houston.  During the first year, approximately 600 families received a box of non-perishable food.  Each box fed a family of four during the holiday.

The food drive now provides food for more than 4,000 families in the city of Houston and last year raised more than $64,000 in donations.  All cash donations are used to purchase basic food staples packaged for distribution to families.

The distribution of the food will be held at a later date to churches that pre-registered to participate in the program.  For more information, contact the HPD Public Affairs Office at 713-308-3200.

HPD Citizens' Police Academy Class 54 (night 2)

It’s week three of the Houston Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy. For ten weeks, 30 Houstonians will learn how HPD handles investigations, calls from citizens, and dangerous situations.
Last week’s class involved a visit to the Houston Emergency Center (HEC) where participants met with call takers to learn how emergency calls come in, and are prioritized and dispatched.

Tonight, members of Class 54 take their class on the road and have a chance to meet with HPD’s DWI officers to learn what happens once an officer first observes a suspected drunk driver.  Participants will learn about the tools and training these specialized officers use to help keep our city’s streets and highways safe.
The Citizens’ Police Academy was started in 1989 with a goal of giving citizens from all walks of life a working knowledge of how HPD operates. It stresses the importance of citizens partnering with police to prevent and fight crime throughout the city.

For more information, go to HERE.
